The Junior section established itself firmly in during 2014, gaining over 20 members with a good mix of both boys and girls. With ages ranging from 5 to 12, we teach a range of skills in a fun, safe environment. The Club has three British Cycling qualified coaches; Kirsty, Chris and David Fenn. Club members and parents are welcome to help with the Juniors sessions.
We now use several venues to coach a variety of skills, with the majority of the sessions either being held at Great Cornard Upper School or Great Cornard Country Park. The Upper School allows us to teach general bike skills whilst the Country Park is great for teaching off-road skills. We have decided to charge for the sessions, with a charge £1 per week for members and £2 per week for non-members. This money has allowed us to buy the equipment required to run the sessions. Occasionally small groups are taken to Thetford Forest or the outdoor track at Maglia Rosso, Hawstead, putting into practice the skills they’d learnt throughout the year.
We hope to keep the Junior members that we have and expand on that. During the winter months we have used the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, to teach non-cycling, cycling skills. In the first of these sessions we attempted to teach the children how to mend punctures but only really succeeded in teaching them to make rockets using track pumps!!
Summer sessions take place on a Monday evening at 6.30pm for 1 hour, with newcomers always welcome. All we ask is that the child has a helmet and a bike that is safe. The Club also now has a range of junior clothing – details on the Clothing page of the website. We have also created a Cycle Club Sudbury Juniors Facebook page that gives details of when and where the sessions will take place, and gives the parents a chance to communicate with the coaches.
